At BestStart Riverbend Road we shared our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast.

This year we cooked pancakes and ate together with our tamariki and their mums.

The morning felt calm and welcoming as everyone arrived and settled in, with conversation and laughter filling the space. Over pancakes and yoghurt, there were cuddles and stories shared between families. Tamariki were happy to sit at the tables, use utensils to cut their food, and eat independently.

They looked proud, settled, and excited to share friendships and stories with their mums before heading off to start the work day. This breakfast supported whanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (kindness and care), which sit at the heart of our centre kaupapa.

Tamariki experienced their mums being welcomed into our space, strengthening their sense of belonging. As tamariki sat, shared stories, and enjoyed being together, they were showing the Te Whāriki learning outcome “Children and their families experience an environment where connecting links with the family and the wider world are affirmed and extended.”

Using utensils also highlighted growing independence and self-help skills within a familiar routine. We look forward to sharing our next centre event with whānau and having the opportunity to share in these special moments alongside our centre community.
