Moving our equipment

Moving our equipment

Communication and Consultation

Te toia, te haumatia - Nothing can be achieved without a plan, workforce and a way of doing things.

We shared an idea before lunch about moving some favourite equipment around. After lunch, we had a hui to share the idea about moving our Fire Truck and our walking bridge. Everyone loved this idea, and they were keen to get in and help after their delicious kai of roast chicken and vegetables that Debbie had prepared earlier.

First, we took photos of the area, so we all knew what was happening, where to go and what to move first. Next, the process occurred. But we discovered we needed some extra help to move the fire truck and called on our friend Kana to support us.

Next, the process happened. But we discovered we needed some extra help to move the fire truck and called on our friend Kana to support us. Before moving the bridge, we spotted some old leaves and dirt that needed to be removed. Some of our helpers ran to get the equipment we needed to clean up.

Once the job was done, we set to work as our plan began to take shape. Everyone pulled and pushed, holding onto the bridge. We were able to slide this onto the ground. When we moved it to where the fire truck was, we discovered a problem. The tyres were in the way. Our friend Ollie came up with a solution announcing, "We need to move the tyres". We picked up the tyres to roll them away from the area. Then we could move the bridge along.

We continued to slide the bridge along the turf to its new home.

When we finished, we stopped to look and see if this would be the right place for the bridge to be. Everyone climbed on the bridge to walk over it. I think everyone is happy about the new move. We look forward to the new learning. We love missions like this, where our tamariki are involved in the process.

This is the space that belongs to them. They experience an environment where they know they each have a place here with a strong sense of belonging. To include our tamariki as part of the communication, we are consulting them with plans for an outcome of what will be next. We are sharing an idea with them and seeing what they think.

This was a wonderful way to showcase how we work as a team, what happens when we work together and why. The outcomes are evident. It is for all our tamariki to know how we relate to one another, what happens when we do and to grow together into the ways of being fair for all here.

This is also an opportunity to change our play space so we can continue seeing where our children's interests will be and notice the new learning that is happening.
