My BestStart journey

I have been a part of BestStart for over 10 years now, moving through a journey of growth, development and learning. My journey began as a high school student, with a part-time after school job working with children at Kids to Five on Somerset (now known as TopKids Somerset).

This then grew to a job over the school holidays and eventually a full time permanent job after finishing school. I was then given an opportunity to work in the administrators role, and did this for three months before realizing my passion was in working with and alongside children.

I then moved to another Beststart centre where I transitioned from a caregiver, to a teacher in training. Throughout my years of training I was fortunate to have the support and guidance of experienced teachers as well as opportunities to work with the three different age groups in our centre, furthering my experience and knowledge to adapt my practice for the differing needs of tamariki.

Once becoming fully qualified, I was successful in my application to become a head teacher, then moved to the role as Assistant Manager. Through these leadership roles I was well supported to be successful through the mentoring received from my Centre Manager and Professional Services Manager, as well as the many professional development opportunities available to me.

I engaged in the Future Leaders course offered by Beststart, and following this became a Centre Manager. My journey as a manager has been positive and supportive, again with many opportunities for further development through advanced leadership courses, and coaching and mentoring from an experienced PSM.

The professional development that is available to grow and challenge me as well as the amazing support received from those within the organisation has ensured a wonderful journey through my developing career.

Cheryl is a wonderful asset to our BestStart family!
