In our over 2s room, we have a current focus on "Our Bodies". We have been learning everything about our bodies, including the names of our body parts (including the correct terminology for our private parts), the importance of our bodies being our bodies, and that no one is allowed to touch us and make us feel uncomfortable. We have been using this video to reinforce this imporant message - - check it out, the catchy tune is currently being sung around our playground and empowering our tamariki. We have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe, healthy and mentally well. We have been talking about emergencies and the number to call if we need help - 111! We have extended this interest with emergency role play and emergency drills. The children acted quickly when they saw me in role play mode, with a cut on my leg. They knew that they needed to put on gloves to protect their own bodies from the blood, call 111, put the bandage on to stop the bleeding and to comfort me. Their empathy was impressive. Our earthquake drill is a regular occurrence, but with the help of our friend Stan and the Turtle safe song, our tamariki jumped into their turtle poses so fast, and made sure to keep their bodies and their friend's bodies safe too. Check out the turtle safe song here - Daily meditation and yoga has been a strong focus on supporting our tamariki and their mental health and keeping all parts of their bodies fit and well. We have been learning about the importance of having quiet moments to reset our bodies and beging able to use these techniques to help calm our bodies when sometimes the big emotions can get a bit overwhelming. This is our current favourite - We've loved including this focus in our dramatic play, we have all become doctors, paramedics, health workers and dentists. We even had a visit from the dentist to check all our teeth. These real life experiences strengthen the knowledge and understanding and put into perspective the learning that is occurring and they can transfer this straight away to make sense for them in their own world.
