This year in Aotearoa, March 5th-March 13th was our national Sea Week. In te ruma Kakano (the Under 2s), our tamariki already have an interest in animals and the noises that they make.

We set up provocations using the sea animal resources that we had available, using water play and natural resources such as rocks so that the provocation  replicated a sea creatures natural living environment. The kaiako told stories of where each animal might live, what their names were, and what noises we thought they might make. We also asked the tamariki what noises they thought the animals might make.

Through observing our tamariki in play with the sea creatures, our kaiako developed understandings of how our tamariki make sense of the natural world.

We also took some of our larger sea animals to a separate table with some more water and paint brushes. We gently began to clean the animals after our play which supported our tamarki to show manaakitanga and be kaitiaki of our beautiful taonga. Here we are forming a respect for the natural environment and learning to appreciate the taonga that Papatūānuku has provided us with.

The child learns through active exploration of the environment/ Ko te whakatipurana tēnei o te mana rangahau, me ngā mātauranga katoa e pā ana ki te aotūroa me te taiao.
