Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Donna and Rachel into our centre to wānanga with us about some of our local history and the tuna in our area.

We enjoyed a pūrākau where the children got to be active parts of the storytelling as well as place-based information about the tuna in our area. We found out where they live, information around their life cycles, and even how they behave when feeling threatened.

We have been working really hard exploring the tikanga value of kaitiakitaka and this was a great way to extend our children's knowledge as we talked about keeping our waterways clean and free flowing to ensure our tuna can grow up healthy and make their journey to and from Tonga to breed.

To finish our 'Tuna Experience', Donna and Rachel invited us to join them in making our very own tuna out of clay. We used our hands to roll out the clay and then pinch up their fins.

Our long fin eels really are incredible creatures, and we are very lucky to have this threatened species here in South Canterbury.

Below are some links to the Mahinga Kai YouTube channel and the Ngāi Tahu website. They are full of information, and if you would like to get involved in helping to care for our waterways feel free to have a look and get in touch.
