New Balls
Our children often see new resources coming into their classrooms, and they see that often teachers request resources that then arrive sometime later. A while ago, I found a letter on my desk that our little one Frankie had written to me with help from her teachers. Frankie felt that there weren’t enough balls in her playground and in her letter she drew a great picture of balls and asked me to buy some more. I checked out the ball supply in Frankie’s classroom playground and I had to agree, the Wheke Room children need more balls!
I looked online at one of our great suppliers of resources and chose lots of different balls for the Wheke Room for Frankie and her friends, and I replied to Frankie attaching the order confirmation so Frankie could see what I ordered. I let Frankie know that when the balls arrived, she could open the box!
Many days went by and we wondered when our order would come? But today was the day! A big box arrived and I took it down to the Wheke Room and Frankie opened the box! First we felt a bit worried as lots of the balls were flat! But then we realised that we needed to pump them up! Frankie was really pleased with all the balls and excited to see them all blown up and ready to play with soon!
At BestStart Kilmarnock, our learners have agency to lead their own learning. This often means we spend our resource money linked directly to what our learners are interested in and what they need to support their current areas of interest. Its delightful to see that Frankie and her Wheke friends understand the process of asking for a resource, ordering this and receiving it. We love that our tamariki know that we order the things that they most need for their learning.
