Our oceans have contributed largely to New Zealand’s own creation stories as well as the story of our current culture around a “clean, green” nation.

This morning, nga tamariki were able to dig their toes in a little more and have a bigger discussion about our oceans and what is in them.We celebrated with some ataahua face paint that represented some of the animal life we find within the sea, this awesome learning continued outside as we explored water play with some of our favourite aquatic friends.

The tamariki were having a lot of fun but the message of sustainability also came into play at our mat time, as we read a story about an anemone, a hermit crab and a bristle worm all sharing the same shell and how at one point they had to use rubbish from the ocean to find housing.

Our Friday finished with a wonderful treat of glitter blue jelly that represented our oceans and marshmellow ika to represent all of the wonderful animals we have to look after within the moana.

Through this celebration our tamariki develop a better understanding of the importance of our oceans not only to our culture and the stories we share of our history, but also to the sustainability of our world.
