Over the past couple of weeks, the children in Rua room (BestStart Blenheim Central) have been learning about the nine visible stars of Matariki. They have learnt about the significance of the stars and have been exploring experiences that relate to this. For example one of the stars - waipuna-a-rangi represents rainfall so the children made a giant cloud and raindrops, participated in a rain cloud experiment and made rainbow umbrellas.

At the end of this learning we celebrated Matariki by hosting a shared kai so the children, their whanau and teachers could share together. The children were involved in preparing for this celebration by grating, chopping and preparing vegetables for the soup.

Through these experiences, the children learnt more about the significance of the nine visible stars of Matariki and learnt about the meaning behind the stars. The children were actively involved in the food preparation to share with others, which helped them learn to work together as a group towards a shared goal.
