At the beginning of November, we celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights with tamariki and whanau. We learnt about the Diwali legend and how this colourful festival originated. The moral of the legend is good over evil. We painted beautiful Henna and Rangoli art activities with children.

On the 8th of November we invited families to a Diwali centre event. A delicious afternoon tea was prepared of traditional food for children, whanau and kaiako to enjoy. Preschool children did a dance performance for parents that they practised for a few weeks prior. This was a great way for children to learn about another cultural festival and for families that celebrate this occasion to feel a sense of belonging at our centre.

During November we also started regular walks to the New Lynn Library.  The 4- to 5-year-old children take turns to be part of an exciting reading, dance and story session at the Library.

On the way to the library there are so many learning opportunities such as, road safety, identifying local buildings, and talking about our local community.

Lots of learning to support children’s development.
