We are excited to share our newly refreshed Reading and Writing Area in our Preschool Room, a space thoughtfully designed to nurture children’s oral language, early literacy, creativity and love of learning.
As a mixed-age environment, our Preschool Room supports children at many different stages of development. We know that literacy learning begins long before children learn to read and write, so our environment reflects the many ways children can engage with language and develop their communication skills.
Some children are exploring books, retelling familiar stories and developing their vocabulary through conversations, while others are recognising letters, identifying letter sounds and beginning to connect sounds to form words.
Our new reading corner invites children to immerse themselves in stories, revisit favourite books and develop their comprehension skills through storytelling, retelling and discussion. Alongside this, our writing station provides easy access to a range of writing materials, encouraging children to draw, make marks, create signs, write messages and record their ideas throughout the day.
For our older learners, our Set for School Book Bag Programme provides additional opportunities to build confidence with books, strengthen oral language and develop early literacy skills that support a positive transition to school.
These experiences encourage children to become confident communicators, storytellers, readers and writers. Most importantly, the space supports the meaningful interactions and conversations that are at the heart of early literacy learning.
Through stories, play and intentional teaching, we are helping children develop the language and literacy skills they need to express themselves, share their ideas and become lifelong learners.
At BestStart Gillies Avenue, we believe every child has a voice, a story to tell and the potential to thrive as a reader and writer.
