In the toddler room

Over these past few weeks in the toddler room we have had a strong focus on ‘Nurturing our health’ and how to care for our bodies. This has included building our confidence in our self-help skills such as washing our hands; serving our own kai, putting away our belonging and with support doing our own sunblock.

Through these opportunities our tamariki are being perceived as being capable and competent. They are empowered in their learning and it is lovely to see how our tamariki are not only caring for themselves but caring and looking after others and their environment (Maanakitanga).

Our tamariki had a great time using the spoon to dish up their babies kai (cornflour and water), adding it to their own babies bowl and using the spoon to feed them. Then they gently washed their babies faces clean.

The following day we gave our babies a bath and then we washed their clothing, pegging the dolls clothes up to dry on the clothes horse.

Our tamariki were building:

·         Fine motor and manipulative skills as they grasp the peg (using their pincer grip later important for writing).

·         Hand eye-coordination

·         Language and vocabulary

·         Building their resilience as they learn to problem solve in how to feed the baby, or peg babies clothes up to dry.

·         Social skills as they learn to work together with and alongside each other.
