Nurturing Relationships At BestStart Whangaparaoa
At BestStart Whangaparaoa, we value and support Tuakana-Teina Relationships.
It is evident in each classroom, and we observe our older children helping and looking after our younger children by taking them under their wings. These relationships naturally occur when children are in an environment where they feel a sense of belonging and responsibility to offer guidance and care.
Often, this is a reciprocal interaction where they are happy to be around each other. We, as teachers, are there to encourage and support when necessary. Otherwise, the children are free to explore their emotional needs and willingness to initiate and engage in positive relationships with one another. It's fantastic to see this Tuakana-Teina relationship when children are transitioning into new classrooms. It helps a new child experience accepting environments by having friends there to welcome and make transitions fun and vibrant experience for everyone.
Children are encouraged and invited to our intentional experiences throughout the day, where they are able to collaboratively work alongside others by getting to know each other and developing trusting relationships. It's heart-warming to see them walking around holding hands together and respecting each other's company.
We are very proud to have Tuakana-Teina relationships within our centre, as it shows how comfortable and confident they are to create such a supportive and welcoming environment for all.
