NZ sign language week

NZ sign language week

NZ sign language week was held in May, and our tamariki were fascinated to learn all about this special language. Our kaiako, Sue, told them to close their ears tightly so that they could experience what it must feel like not to be able to hear anything.

She then taught them all the different signs of the letters of the alphabet and also showed them how to sign phrases like "I love you" and "I am fine/good". The tamariki had a chance to try it and practise the letter their names started with.

What a great experience for the children and staff to work alongside each other to learn and acknowledge NZ sign language - one of the official languages of New Zealand. An amazing skill to have and to be able to build on during NZ sign language week and beyond!
