In the Kawakawa room at BestStart Papakura we promote Tuakana/Teina relationships between our pre-schoolers.  Learning through play, we use equipment like Lego blocks to promote early numeracy, via colour patterns, shapes and size.  Working together encourages problem solving, builds their leadership skills, sharing ideas and building on their friendships.  Celebrating success is what we embed in the children to help build self-efficacy and self-esteem.  In readiness for school, our pre-schoolers are encouraged to look after their own belongings, begin to build their conflict resolution skills for their social growth, recognise letters, count and when they are ready start to form letters and numbers.

In the areas of art and construction, this has seen the development and exploration of design concepts, use of colour. During this process there is an opportunity for teachers to demonstrate thinking aloud, leading to a lot of conversation and problem solving.
