Halayaa Everyone,

Onam is the official state festival of Kerala. It is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by Malayalees regardless of religion, caste, or creed. We also celebrated this at our Beststart Coronation Road centre yesterday where our families contributed different vegetables from their home.

We were grateful to have one of the parents who joined us to make this celebration more magnificent. She helped us cook Avial, the traditional South Indian dish of Kerala, and she also used flower petals to make a floral rangoli with the children. This celebration encouraged our children to promote their wellbeing in a range of ways such as:

  • Promoting their health by keeping themselves healthy and caring for themselves | te oranga nui
  • Connecting links with the family and the wider world are affirmed and extended by making connections between people, places, and things in their world | te waihanga hononga
  • Creating equitable opportunities for learning, irrespective of gender, ability, age, ethnicity or background and treating others fairly by including them in play | te ngākau makuru
  • Encouraging to learn with and alongside others through using a range of strategies and skills to play and learn with others | te ngākau aroha

Our children enjoyed participating in the different activities as it encouraged them to practice sharing with others since this is one of the common aspirations for most of our parents. We do know that most of the families are celebrating Onam today so we would like to wish them, “Happy Onam”.
