We're sorted for bike maintenance at BestStart Foxton Beach Kindy. Our boys Carter, Corban and Zach set up a pretend bike workshop, "What is the problem with your bike?" Carter would ask his customers. This went on for a while when we offered them some real tools to use. This created a huge spike in activity with the children taking turns at using the tools and pretending to undo bolts and tighten wheels.

They had to take turns and negotiate with others about what they needed. Before long we had Brooklyn, Harvey and Braxton join in. They were left with the fixing role and Carter, Corban and Zach did the test driving. Soon Millie, Grace and Holly joined in the fixing. We had to have a quick discussion about girls being able to be mechanics as well as boys. This was a great discussion leaving our girls empowered and our boys a bit more accepting of modern times.

All children worked hard and achieved some amazing collaboration in the workshop. We love learning like this, spontaneous and completely child driven. How exciting and meaningful for our developing brains.
