Here at BestStart Manly, the children love to help their kaiako (teachers) bake! Baking is a significant part of our curriculum and we are very aware that a lot of children help their whanau (family) with this at home too, therefore we continue to support what is happening at home.

Tamariki (children) enjoy helping to make morning and afternoon teas such as pikelets, soup, biscuits, slices and a NZ favourite.....sandwiches!

Throughout this process, children are learning about creating a product through a process from start to finish, as well as learning maths skills of measuring, pouring, mixing and what ingredient is heavier than the other. Tamariki are encouraged to help cut up the ingredients, pour the mixture into the bowl, stirring the ingredients and be involved at every step.

There is also the social skills of being in a group, learning to take turns and most of all...having fun with friends! It is also a great opportunity to create a discussion around healthy eating and healthy choices. We look forward to continuing our journey around cooking to support our Healthy Heart award as well as all of the yummy smells coming out of the classrooms!!
