Over the last couple of months, we have been celebrating a few different events at Best Start Delta. Our tamariki have been celebrating with artwork, music and dance. They made Easter Eggs with natural resources, such as pebbles, sand, dried flowers, leaves, sawdust and bark, followed by an easter egg hunt.

We then celebrated a colourful day of Holi, the Indian Spring festival. Tamariki and Kaiako had fun together showering each other with coloured powder. It is such a privilege to celebrate the different festivals in one place where all the children are celebrating as one family irrespective of ethnicity, culture, religion or nationality.

Preschool tamariki are singing the NZ National Anthem and learning to use sign language as they sing. We have included science and math in their learning through the skeleton, learning the basic body parts and the height chart measurement. We are participating in a long-term research programme “Engage” where we use a variety of activities every day, focusing on emotional, behavioural, and cognitive learning which we monitor and assess the progress of learning.

It is wonderful to see our tamariki learning these essential skills and we’ve had positive feedback from our whanau. In our Pepi (Baby) rooms the focus has been on sensory exploration. Exploring with flour, gloop, and different textured resources.

These activities help our tamariki to use their bodies and senses and make sense of the interesting world around them, they interact with each other and develop early social and language skills.
