Our centre philosophy

Our centre philosophy

Introduction: Our philosophy is the heart of the matter, weaving together our knowledge, values and beliefs that guides our practice.  At BestStart Havelock North we believe that the child is the seed that is fertile and open to learning.

Relationships ~ Ngā Hononga

We are intentionally committed to grow and nurture respectful and caring relationships for all.  Each child is a contributing member, growing and thriving in an environment when their sense of oneself is valued and they know they have a place where they belong.

Cultural identity ~ bicultural and multicultural

We believe that self-identity and culture are inseparable.  We embrace diversity and celebrate all cultures, languages and identities of all children.  Our setting environment reflects the attitudes, ethics and cultures of everyone within the centre.  We nurture children to gain a positive awareness of their own and other cultures.

A child’s wairua ~ spirit

Children’s mind and body will be nurtured, enhancing self-worth and promoting self-esteem.  The spiritual dimension of children’s learning and the recognition of the child’s spiritual and cultural heritage is similarly interwoven with concepts of respect and empathy.

Positive guidance and self-regulation

We believe that warm, responsive and trusting relationships create a positive environment, allowing children to form positive social relationships with their peers, teachers and others.

As teachers, we purposefully provide sensitive, comforting care and strategies to support children’s self-regulation, so they are able to find a balance to manage feelings and behaviour.

With trusting and supportive relationships in place, children are given opportunities to practise self-regulation skills with the support and guidance of a trusted adult.

Curriculum ~ Te Whāriki

Teachers set up environments designed for every age and ability to foster children's learning and development.  We actively offer opportunities to extend on children’s interests, funds of knowledge and spontaneous play.  We give value to whanau aspirations - what matters to you, matters to us.

Teaching strategies are weaved into teachable moments to support children as they learn and grow.  This enables children to confidently and actively engage in learning, to reach their full potential.

We honour the dual cultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand in accordance with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  This guides our teaching practice to facilitate children’s learning in an inclusive environment. We believe in empowering children, whanau and teachers to become increasingly aware of our culturally diverse community which promotes educational success for all children.

Active learners

We empower children to engage in play in authentic spaces for playful inquiry that has endless potential and possibilities.

Environment / third teachers

In our setting, we advocate a calm and unhurried environment.  Children’s rhythms and rituals are used to provide a climate of enjoyment and relaxation.  This offers a child the opportunity to unfold at their own pace.

We believe in empowering children to be active learners, to actively engage in investigating and making discoveries as they question and explore the world around them.

Children are nurtured to enquire and delight in nature.  Papatuanuku is respected as the wonder of nature is explored.  We promote a passion for plants and all living things are valued and discovered through curiosity.

Summary:  That which is nurtured through LOVE grows and blossoms
