Our children's literacy skills are fostered in the Pukeko classroom

As it is said that literacy is the basis for children's learning, enhancing young children's literacy skills from a young age is a vital responsibility of we of teachers.

Therefore, with the understanding that literacy consists of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, kaiako in our Pukeko classroom provides our tamariki with a variety of experiences in order to enhance their literacy skills under these four domains.

Storytelling, picture description, singing, talking, being expressive with different modes and media, access to books and environmental prints, and playing are some of the ways we create opportunities to promote engagement in a literacy-rich environment for our tamariki.

Since Vygotsky's (a Developmental Psychologist) 'twin notions of Access and Mediation in terms of literacy for young children are at the heart of our pedagogy, not only do we make our tamariki accessible to resources and opportunities in our learning environment, but also we mediate with thoughtful and intentional teaching strategies to scaffold their literacy skills.

It is a salient feature of the practice of our kaiako that having recognised children's interests or their readiness for extending their learning to the next level (ZPD), they even make innovative personalised resources to extend their literacy skills, bringing outstanding progressions in their literacy learning.
