Here at Kelvin Grove, our cook Jo had an awesome idea for; why don’t we grow our own veggies! We have worked hard with the amazing support of our whānau, to create our very own community veggie garden and a sensory herb garden.

We had whānau support demolish the old garden and to design and create the new garden. Whānau also helped with sourcing materials and a weekend working bee to get the garden up and running. The tamariki have been and continue to be an important part of the gardening and harvesting processes. The tamariki learn about the benefits of plant to plate through growing our own kai and the reward of being kaitiaki (protecting and looking after our environment).

The vegetables have been grown from seeds and children have loved watching the exciting process of the seeds sprouting and growing into our vegetables. These vegetables are eaten within the centre when ready and, having seen and been involved in the cycle, the children are enthusiastic about tasting them! Our vision here at Kelvin Grove includes Respect - Manakitanga, and Teamwork –Kotahitanga where we are considerate of others and the environment we share and being part of a team with my friends, teachers and whānau and our community veggie garden reflects these values in action beautifully.

Our veggie and herb garden also helps us maintain our Pā Harakeke Healthy Heart Gold Award so it is a win win!
