Our edible garden

Our edible garden

It has been an amazing summer here at Doncaster Kindy.  The children and Kaiako have established their edible garden which is situated in the rear of their outdoor learning environment.  We have grown a lot of produce from a variety of plants including capsicum, tomato, chili, eggplant, coriander, celery, zucchini, and basil.  It has been amazing watching the vegetable plants grow as we take turns watering them each morning and evening.  A special thank you to Niko's mum Lynda, who donated some of her own tomato and rocket seedlings to our edible garden which she grew from her own greenhouse:) It has been awesome to share our vegetables with our whanau and our community.  This enables our children to deepen their understanding of whanaungatanga/family and community and their place within it.  Being a kaitaikaitanga/guardian encourages our children to express their respect for the living world and knowledge about how to care for it and how the living world cares for them.  As our summer comes to an end, we will be thinking about our winter crop and what plants we could grow during the colder months of autumn and winter.
