TopKids Virginia Avenue has a great focus on Bi Cultural practices in a multi-cultural setting.

Centre 4 initiated  an in-depth Bi cultural practices and were slowly spread to the other parts of the centre.

Centre 4  Kaiako (teachers) have been reading Maori legends to our Tamariki (children), and our Tamariki really enjoyed listening to the Taniwha story and learning about different Taniwha’s (good and bad ones).

After learning about Taniwha's, Tamariki showed interest in creating Taniwha's. Our Kaiako and Tamariki together made a Taniwha. Taniwha as a guardian and protector of our room and our Iwi

Our Centre 5 Tamariki along with Kaiako also started to get more creative in developing new ways of learning Maori values, language, and  Legends.

Kaiako read Maori legends with Tamariki. Our Tamariki enacted Legends and had heaps of fun and learning with and alongside Kaiako .

Our Kaiako creatively arranged for a puppet show on Maui and the sun based on one of our Tamariki's interest in the legend.

Tamariki were encouraged to play Maori board games such as “Kei A Wai?  Who has it? And Tamariki enjoyed playing and learning phrases in  Te Reo Maori.

Tamariki created Korowai (Cloak), they were involved in the whole process of Developing an understanding of the importance of Korowai, and making Korowai. Tamariki celebrated success once the process was  complete.

Kaiako offered opportunities to Tamariki to know and understand the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi. As a continuation of learning the Tamariki were encouraged to Sign a Treaty between Kaiako and Tamariki of Centre 5

From all the above fun , play and learning ,our Tamariki had :opportunities to learn more about their own and other cultures, Opportunities for sharing and building social confidence,Learning appropriate group interactions , learning to respect  others and their contributions, and encourages Tamariki to learn through fictional and non fictional stories.
