At Melling the children and teachers have completed their veggie garden.

The children helped kaiako Justine to plant all the different vegetable plants that Tina had bought from Bunnings.

After planting the plants, the children had the opportunity to water the plants with one of our preschool teachers each day. A few weeks later the children noticed a green tomato which looked like a small pumpkin.

This week Riley and Tina decided to harvest some silver beet and mini cucumbers for our cook Jo to use in the kitchen. Riley helped cut all the big green leaves of the silver beet and delivered it to Jo to the kitchen. During the afternoon the children ate the mini cucumbers, fresh from our garden.

The children love seeing the garden grow and they cannot wait to see what the other vegetable plants will look like when they grow. Children are learning about nature and how plants grow. They are learning the importance of healthy eating and how we can get lots of nutrients from them. The children are eager to try broccoli, cauliflower and the tomatoes as soon as it is ready to eat.

A great way for children to learn about the living world around us.
