The tamariki at BestStart Meadowbank were busy this month with gardening. We had planted cauliflower, cabbages, tomatoes, beetroots, strawberries and some herbs towards the end of autumn.

The children have been caring for the garden along with teacher Rupa by watering ,weeding and keeping the snails and bugs away from the plants. Now we are very happy as the vegetables and fruits are ready to harvest.

The tamariki proudly pick the veggies and give it to our cook Antonio who makes yummy meals out of them. The occasional snails and bugs in the garden are great excitement to the children and they move them carefully to a safe place.

We see it as a part of our Kindness project where the children are told about our responsibility as the Kaitai ( guardians) of the nature in looking after the garden. There is a sense of manaakitanga as the tamariki actively participated in the planting of the vegetable garden, looking after and watching the plants grow and harvested it for our Kai.

We are also developing our knowledge and understanding about the nature, papatuanuku, seasons, propagation and caring for plants and how they grow , sustainable living and healthy eating that leads to a healthy mind and body.
