Our Hikoi Up Ohinerau
With the weather being kind to us, our whanau (being super helpers), kaiako (teachers) and tamariki (children) began our hīkoi (walk) up our local maunga Ōhinerau (Mt Hobson). Our toddlers and older children enjoyed the walk up to the base of Ōhinerau. The path leading to the mountain was muddy from the previous night's heavy rain. But this didn't stop any of us. Our determination lead us forward and we reached our destination. We had shared morning tea and the whole group enjoyed fruits, cookies and muffins. Thanks to our cook Rajbir and Alvino's mum Andra for the yummy treats.
The children had read about Māori kite known as manu tukutuku or manu aute. Our tamariki had already made some kites. They enjoyed flying the kite with their whanau. It was interesting to learn the legends and stories behind the different types of kites and to make it. Children enjoyed learning more about the tradition and culture. Kites were flown to celebrate the start of the Māori New Year, when Matariki (the Pleiades) appeared in the mid-winter night sky and our tamariki had fun following this tradition.
