Our hut building adventure
Our large willow tree provides us with wonderful natural resources after big winds. Building huts with the fallen branches is a fun way to learn about teamwork and respecting other’s opinions when working together. Children and teachers started by placing a rug on the ground, then they constructed the base from some long bare sticks and rope. Teachers tied them together while children held onto the extra pieces of rope to pass to when needed. Once the base was all sorted children began placing the gathered branches on top to form their hut. After they had used all the branches, it was time to test it out and in they all went, there was plenty of room for everyone and they could even stand up in it. Some children noticed a couple of bare patches and commented that they were windows. The hut was very popular and all the children were very good at communicating with others that there was no room right now and that they would have to wait if it was feeling a little squishy.
This was a great demonstration of how we enjoy our natural playground, work together with manakitanga (respect) and having a lot of fun!
