At Community Kindy Mount we have a lovely blue tongued lizard named ‘Blue’. The children are very good at looking after Blue. They take him to his favourite sunbathing spots, collect snails for him to eat and let him join in their play! They make mazes for him with the blocks, and leaf beds for him to sleep in. Blue has provided many opportunities for the children to learn how to care for animals and to treat ‘creatures’ gently. These opportunities support a sense of respecting nature and developing empathy. It also creates opportunities for children to work together. Experiences such as these help build lifelong skills and give children a connection that may in the future support caring for their environment, as well as each other.
