Our Matariki bonfire

Our Matariki bonfire

It was bitter cold after playing with the frost, so I decided to light up a bonfire to warm our hands. We successfully built a fireplace in the sandpit with recycled egg cartons, carpentry wood bits and twigs. The tamariki were amazed at this idea. Everyone was so happy sitting around the fire as we talked about how to light a fire for heating and cooking, as well as rules to keep us safe. We also got a bucket of water ready to put out the fire. The tamariki are looking forward to making another bonfire and to cook some potatoes and marshmallows too. Perhaps next time I will incorporate Ngātoroirangi and the fire sisters story into the experience as well. Engaging children in exploring natural elements is great fun and sustainable which helps both kaiako (teacher) and tamariki (children) to make links to the spiritual dimension and developing scientific working theories.
