Our Matariki Night
Here at BestStart Paraparaumu, we have been learning all about the importance and significance of Matariki.
To celebrate our learning, we had a whānau evening where they got to come along, join in our activities and learn alongside us. The children all worked together to decide what activities they thought would best represent the nine stars of Matariki. With a show of lights over each activity, we all had fun creating the following:
Ururangi - kite making
Tupuārangi - Making clay pots and decorating with leaves from fruit trees
Waipunarangi - Colouring page of water
Hiwa-i-te-rangi - a wishing well where whānau wrote their dreams and aspirations
Waiti - fishing for eels
Waita - natural resources from the beach to model and create with Pōhutukawa - A reflection tree glistening in lights for whānau to write their thoughts tp passed loved ones onto
Tupuanuku - planting seed
Then to end the evening off and to represent the Mataiki star, everybody got to take home a kete with a whakatoki, mindful activities and a cluster of waiata that our tamariki sing here in our kapa haka sessions.
