We are so excited to start our new vegetable garden and plant our yummy vegetables ready for Matariki. Before we get our vegetables in the garden the tamariki had to prepare the soil and clean out the weeds, so our shovels went in and the weeds came out. This was a great way to use the muscles in our arms and release all of our built-up excitement and energy.

During this process we happened to find a snail and a worm. The children were very fascinated by the worm and while many children wanted to hold the worm, they were scared. Slowly taking turns, they decided the best place to place the worm was back in the garden. Discussions were happening around Papatūānuku and Matariki, and most of the children mentioned they wanted to eat carrots because they are yummy.

We discussed that during Matariki we are going to have some of our vegetables in a soup and that the children will be able to help make that soup. We will also be able to give some vegetables to our families to take home. After clearing our garden we managed to plant a variety of vegetables that the children have access to when they grow. The children now care for our garden by giving it some water and making sure no one pulls the vegetables out until they have grown.
