We've recently introduced our new Kaitiaki Kaiāwhina role in our Matakauri classroom. Each day one child is chosen to help out and take responsibility for our new routines. Our new kaiāwhina role focuses on the role of kaitiaki, which is a Māori term used to refer to a guardian for the sky, sea and land. The process of protecting and looking after the environment is known as kaitiakitanga.
Therefore, our new kaiāwhina role is all about supporting our kai teacher and our cook, Mora, by watering our newly planted seeds, emptying the compost bins, saying the karakia at kai time, and helping to prepare some delicious and healthy kai for the rest of the tamariki to eat.
