Learning is a journey that begins before birth and continues throughout life.  On this lifelong journey of exploration, Kaiako and new entrants teachers support children by affirming their identity and culture, connecting with and building on their funds of knowledge and having positive expectations for their learning (Te Whariki, 2017).

Anei i te (here at) BestStart Parton Rd we have begun a ‘Be School Ready’ programme.  Our classroom has been set up and consultation has taken place with the new entrant teacher from Papamoa Primary regarding what our ‘Be School Ready’ programme should look like.

Our ‘Be School Ready’ programme will occur every afternoon, from 1.00pm for an hour and it will give our older tamariki a chance to increase their knowledge, develop their literacy skills, learn to write their name, sit on the mat like they do at school and raise your hand if you want to talk, develop their pincer grip so that they can hold a pencil properly, sing waiata, understand letter sounds, read books and gain an insight into what school will be like once they start.

We are very lucky to have a ex Primary School teacher employed here at Parton Rd, and Amy is now our ‘Be School Ready’ Teacher.  Prior to starting this programme, our older tamariki were lucky enough to have a couple of visits over to Papamoa Primary to see and experience first-hand the new entrants classroom – an experience they thoroughly enjoyed.  Here at BestStart Parton Road we are very excited to be implementing this programme into our centre and know that it will be a valuable asset to our curriculum and our centre.
