Over the Christmas Holidays our kaiako and tamariki have worked really hard to create an outdoor, natural rock garden for our tamariki. This garden has lots of loose parts, rocks, plants, stumps, logs, flowers and a water bowl for our tamariki to creatively explore and direct their own play.

Playing with natural resources builds our relationships with Papatūānuku, Mother Earth. Our tamariki are learning how to be kaitiaki, guardians of our Papatūānuku, of our taiao, our natural environment. Playing with these natural resources was a non prescriptive approach to learning. With no single way to do it, our tamariki had their own freedom to create their own purpose with each object. Our natural play experiences are about curiosity and exploration allowing our tamariki to select, manipulate, explore, compare items, whilst allowing them to discover what the object can and can’t do.
