Our Sunflowers
As we move into summer, it’s the perfect time for planting some sunflowers.
We bought sunflower seeds and grow-pellets from our local hardware store. The tamariki popped their grow-pellets into some water and watched as they filled up and expanded. Once they were all filled with water, the tamariki each put a seed into the grow-pellet.
After two weeks of sitting in the sun and drinking lots of water, the seeds had sprouted and were ready to plant in our garden.
Since then, the tamariki have been watering the sunflowers and watching them grow. It’s been over a month now and the sunflowers are getting really tall.
This has been a great opportunity for them to begin expanding their knowledge on the natural world and learning about the concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship), especially in relation to our immediate natural environment.
