Our tamariki are proud of our Nation

Here at Montessori Otumoetai we work alongside our tamariki, supporting their own unique learning journey and empowering each child for their individuality. Through these connections it enables us to establish close relationships and understanding with their whanau and culture.

During the month of the Matariki celebration, our teachers used this as an opportunity to elaborate to our tamariki about our nation and its bicultural foundations.

Leading up to Matariki, our teachers and tamariki worked in preparation for an event which whanau were invited to come and partake in with a movie we had prepared, showing what our tamariki had been learning.

Tamariki worked together with Kaiako to learn a range of different te reo waiata including our National anthem in te reo Maori and English. As well as poi dancing and also participating in acting out a Maori legend “How Maui slowed the sun”. The tamariki were so excited to take part in different areas of the movie and had so much fun learning the different dances, songs and increasing their Te reo vocabulary. It was also a great learning experience for tamariki to practice their social skills such as patience, turn taking, listening and following directions.
