Our tamariki celebrating what they know

We were gifted some Medals and decided that this would be a great thing to pass on to our tamariki to celebrate what they know when it comes to ways of knowing, ways of being and ways of doing.

We called this concept 'What it means to be a Champion'. As a team, we had been noticing what great things all our leaders were engaged in within our environment. The Akoranga-learning was strong as children understood how to take care of each other, support and guide new tamariki into our community, help someone that needed a cuddle, and to know how to show our new friends the way here.

We had a hui to share with our community what we had noticed. Our tamariki shared with us what it means to be a kind friend. These are some of their thoughts. We say "thank you". We use kind hands. We use kind words. You can say "Can I play with you, and you can say yes". We give hugs, being nice.

Next came the presentation of these Medals. When we announced the names, each child would stand up and go to the front. We would hear who they have helped. When presented with a Medal, we all clapped and cheered. Later, when their families arrived, they, too, were so very proud. This concept relates to our philosophy of who we are and what we adhere to with our centre treaty.
