Over the last few weeks we have followed the tamariki (children’s) interest that was sparked by celebrating Matariki. The children were curious about space. Through play we followed the children’s direction to incorporate parents aspirations and link their learning to Te Wharki.

Exploring a range of activities the kaiako provided time and resources to develop holistic learning. As a team we believe it is important to bring learning to life and use the local environment. In Wellington we luck as we have Carters observatory, Space place. With the support of the whanau and parent volunteers we were able to organise an excursion.

The tamariki were very excited to go on a local trip and be able to consolidated their experiences and having the opportunities to share this with their whanau was fantastic. Safety, fun and learning was the priority of our trip and we could see the children doing these through their words and expressions. It was a great way for our tamariki to deepen their knowledge about what they have been learning and extending it further. Throughout this trip the teachers, parents and especially the children had lots of meaningful conversation about what they can see and what they know and have learnt.
