Our Tui's Nest
In our Tui’s Nest one of our 16 areas of play is Science and Nature. In Tui’s Nest, we have just re-designed a new nature exploration area. In this area, there are photos of the children exploring many aspects of the natural world around them. These photos are placed on the wall at the children’s level, so they can talk about these photographs with their peers and revisit their previous learning experiences.
In the Tui’s nest, we use as many natural resources as possible, these resources include splices of wood from the trunk of a tree, lots of different coloured leaves, pinecones, and branches. We also have magnifying glasses and coloured lenses for the children to look through, these give the children a different perspective on how things can look different through these lenses.
As an extra provocation, Kaiako made some nature bottles, these were made with soft drink bottles filled with bottle brush plants, flowers, and ferns. We filled the bottles up with water and fastened the lids on tightly. The water in the bottles acts as a magnifying glass, making the plants inside look much larger than they are. Our Tamariki enjoyed exploring these bottles, turning them around at different angles, and peering through them.
