As a lot of our children have been interested in making paper planes recently, this prompted us to organise a trip to the Air Force Museum in Wigram, making connecting links with our local community.

We started our trip by catching the bus to the Air Force Museum, where we were greeted at the door by an Air Force Officer by the name of Mark.  Mark then took us for a tour of the hangars out the back where we got to see lots of old planes, boats, and cars used in the war.  During this tour of the hangars we had the opportunity to be inside one of the old planes and have a flight simulator take us on a pretend journey from taking off, flying to our destination, and preparing for a rough landing.  Once the plane had landed, the children then had the opportunity to evacuate the plane just like in the war by jumping out the door and landing on crash pads; they all thought this was awesome.

We then carried on our tour through some more hangars looking at different engines and planes in different states of repair, before heading to the museum itself where we had an activity sheet to complete while we were looking at all the planes and machinery that had been restored to its former glory.

This excursion has allowed the children to build on their prior knowledge and interests, and use their imaginations and their new knowledge, to now be more creative in their building of their planes, and the different parts associated with the planes for different jobs., along with extending their construction skills into other areas of the curriculum.
