Our Voyage to Mars
In our preschool and prep rooms recently, we have had a huge interest in science. This has stemmed from a few conversations with our children and one child's newfound skill in drawing spaceships. Here at BestStart Cashmere, we value extending our children’s interests. We do this by providing opportunities for children to explore and discover. We have really extended our children’s interest in space through our classroom and families.
We started with drawing up our own rocket blueprints. Then we gathered up the common ideas and made our very own spaceship. This spaceship took three days and a lot of team work to complete. When it was complete it was time to take it on our maiden voyage to the moon and Mars.
Along the way we have been learning many facts about the planets in our solar system. We decided to make our own versions of these. Making large paper stuffed planets. We made them scaled in comparison to each other and now the children can tell you all the planets in our solar system, what the environment is like on there and many more facts.
Whanau have been a great contributor to our children's learning in the classroom as they have provided many books and resources for us to all share and learn from.
This learning has not only extended and challenged their current interest and learning, it has provided many opportunities for children to work together and to display a great respect for each other as we listen to each other's ideas and implement them in our creations.
