BestStart Waikanae decided to celebrate Matariki for the WAM Festival by creating the embodiment of the whetu (stars) and the Atua (Gods) so we could tell the creation story and how it connects to this special constellation.

With the support of some amazing parents and talented teachers we worked on our costumes for two weeks.  The tamariki had the opportunity to draw, paint and sew their costumes and they did an incredible job.

The tamariki chose their characters and learned all about them. We did some research and found out what all the different stars meant and learned more about the different Atua by reading the myths and legends.  It was beautiful to watch the tamariki sharing this knowledge with their whanau and other visitors to the centre.

On the day of the show we gathered up our toi mahi and headed to Te Rauparaha Arena; full of excitement and a few nerves.  With faces painted and costumes on, we took to the stage.  The children did a wonderful job of telling this story that has become so special to us and our mahi will become taonga that we will display proudly in our classroom.
