Our worm farm project
At Beststart Lytton in the pikopiko rūma we have been learning about our worm farm. Over the past months tamariki have been actively involved in putting scraps into the worm farm, watching the worms move around the dirt as well as finding other animals like slugs that have made the worm farm their home. Once tamariki have turns at putting the food scraps into the worm farm, kaiako and tamariki spend time looking at the worms having learning discussions between each other about the food, how the worms move, what the worms do and the slugs and the sticky trail they leave behind. Once these lovely learning discussions are finished we collect any worm tea and mix water with the worm tea to help with our plants grow. Tamariki love to get their watering cans and putting the worm tea onto our plants. Our tamariki love caring for our outside environment in many ways!
By the tamariki being involved in this project they are learning:
- The benefits of self-sufficiency and how they can contribute to the process by listening and responding to questions.
- To collaborate and interact with others as they set up and take care of a worm farm.
- Exploring ideas, problem solving and challenging thinking.
- To understand repercussions to the environment if we do not take responsibility to look after our living and non living things.
- To extend on current vocabulary as they learn new words and use in their conversations.
- Exploration and hands on investigation of cycles and the anatomy of worms.
Pakau! Mako rai! (Awesome!, well done!) pikopiko rūma.
