Today in our infants and toddlers room, at BestStart, Puni Road, we had lots of fun using different patterns with our paint! Kendra had been pruning the garden boxes, so we jumped at the chance to use the pruned pieces in our activity. Libby laid out a big piece of pepa (paper) on the tepu (table,) where we placed the lavender pieces, and hit splashes of paint around and inside. Our tamariki have been pulling the texture squares out of the draws lately, so we incorporated these into our painting activity. Our tamariki all wondered over, grabbed a seat, and followed each other’s leads.

About the learning:

In our early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, there is a communication strand, that painting supports, this is where our tamariki can discover and develop different ways to be creative and expressive. It also supports the Exploration strand, where children gain confidence in and control of their own bodies, which is being expressed during this activity. We are also able to link this activity to the communication strand under Te Ara Poutama, where 'recognising print symbols and concepts and using them with enjoyment, meaning and purpose | he kōrero tuhituhi'

During this activity, our tamariki observed and mimicked each other, shared laughter, and enjoyment, whilst further growing their fine motor skills and decision making when picking a seat to sit on, a texture pattern, as well as what paint colour appealed to them! It is important our tamariki experience an environment where they discover different ways to be creative and expressive
