This morning at BestStart Morrinsville we spent some time in the garden for our Papatūānuku day. We planted some veges which include tomatoes, beans and pumpkin in our vege garden. This caused for some great excitement as the children dug holes and planted the seeds and visited the various plants already growing. When talking to the tamariki about the seeds we were planting, we decided that it was a good idea to water them so that they will grow. We even found some snails for the children to feed to Murtle! This experience gives the tamariki the opportunity to not only get their hands dirty in the garden but also gives them the opportunity to learn where their kai comes from and the work that goes into getting our kai. Creating a garden supports tamariki in recognising and appreciating their ability to learn as well as having the responsibility for creating something that will eventually produce kai for us all to eat.
