Learning while outside is a large part of the curriculum here at BestStart Mosgiel.  We have a very large outside area and are able to set up some wonderful physical challenges for children to choose to investigate and experiment with.  We have recently purchased additional balancing resources and this has allowed us to provide some great new challenges for both toddlers and young children.  We’ve noticed how the older children are very keen to try out these resources as soon as they’re set up and the toddlers are keener to observe and then follow along.

As gross motor skills begin to strengthen, children’s ability to concentrate, use trial and error and confidently take manageable risks in other aspects of their play also increase.  Being able to take turns and support each other throughout the physical challenges also supports children’s emotional and social competency. Children also show great enjoyment at being able to succeed after using their developing perseverance skills to keep trying, even if it doesn’t work the first time.
