Pink Shirt Day at BestStart Dixon Heights

Pink Shirt Day was on 19th May and as part of our celebrations events calendar, we celebrated Pink Shirt Day at BestStart Dixon Heights. This was in support of anti-bullying and is participated in all throughout Aotearoa. Tamariki and kaiako are encouraged to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora - Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Pink Shirt Day's aim is to reduce bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone. Most wore pink shirts to join in the movement to spread aroha to others and end bullying. Some even came with pink nails. We had resources available for our tamariki to colour and kaiako spoke to tamariki about the resources and the purpose behind them.

Kaiako had mat times to talk to ngá tamariki about bullying prevention and what this means for tamariki. Kindness flowers were made from these discussions and placed on walls as a reminder to be kind to others. Celebrations like this are vital in our tamariki's learning as they become more independent and start preparing for their learning journey in early childhood and eventually to kura (school). This day linked closely to our Centre vision of Love Me, Believe in Me, Teach Me, as well as our Centre Philosophy.
