Lately in the Pitau class here at BestStart Kaikorai Valley road, the tamariki have been showing a strong interest in animals. We have followed this interest through some small world play, using some natural resources like our wooden tree branches alongside small animals.

This has led to hours of fun for their imaginations! Science and nature play helps children learn to observe things closely, explain their thinking and communicate their ideas, this enriches their understanding of the physical world around them. We have also been reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? It is one of our favourite books and the tamariki love making the sounds of the animals as we read through the book.

They are experts at making the quack sound for the duck! Not only are they learning about the different animals they are developing their language and communication skills too. Animal hand puppets have also been a hit recently. The tamariki love taking turns playing with the puppets and they are a great tool for the kaiako (teachers) to use in our mat times and when we are reading our stories.

As you can see the kaiako here love seeing what the childrens interests are and fostering that learning through engaging and fun activities
