Plant Propagation
Plant

As part of our sustainability journey here at BestStart Te Heuheu St Kindy, we have introduced lots of plants into our environment to give it a more nature feel. One of these plants is a Spider plant. We researched about how to take care of it and we found out that we could grow more spider plants from the smaller ones that are called pups.

We found lots of glass jars and filled them with water. We then carefully cut the pups off the plant and placed them in the water so they could grow bigger roots. We kept an eye on these on these for a few weeks until the had grown big enough roots to plant into pots.

Our tamariki were very interested in helping to  pot the plants. They placed the soil into the pots and carefully placed them into the soil before giving our new plants some water.

Our sustainable practices are a big part of our tamariki learning as it gives them the responsibility of being kaitiaki of or plants and how to care for Papatūānuku. Once they are big enough we will hand them out to our whānau to take home so our tamariki will still have the responsibility to still take care of it at home.
